Welcome to Ordinary Time

This Sunday, we entered a new liturgical season: Ordinary Time. And yet, there is nothing “ordinary” about it. After the great feasts and celebrations of Eastertide and Pentecost, the Church now invites us into a long green season of growth, a season not marked by spectacle, but by steady faithfulness. Ordinary Time, sometimes called the season after Pentecost or Trinitytide, is where the Christian life takes root and begins to flourish in the daily rhythms of ordinary life.

One of our favorite ways to celebrate the Feast of the Visitation is by baking a blueberry galette. 🫐

Traditionally, blue is associated with the Virgin Mary, making blueberries a simple and fitting way to mark the feast.

The Visitation commemorates Mary’s journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth after the Annunciation. When Mary arrived, Elizabeth’s unborn child, John the Baptist, leaped for joy, and the two women rejoiced together in God’s faithfulness and grace.

Feast days don’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes a simple dessert shared with family and friends is enough to help us remember and celebrate the story.

Not every season is marked by great feasts or celebration. Sometimes, God forms us most deeply in the ordinary moments — in prayer, repentance, service, Scripture, and daily faithfulness.

This is the season of discipleship.
The season of steady growth.
The season of learning to abide in Christ.

And that is never ordinary.

The Feast of the Ascension is one of the great feast days of the Church year, yet many Christians barely notice it.

But the Ascension is not simply the story of Jesus leaving the earth. It is the triumphant enthronement of Christ the King. It is the completion of His saving work, the opening of heaven to humanity, and the beginning of the Church’s mission through the power of the Holy Spirit.

For centuries, Christians marked this feast with processions, prayers, mountain hikes, bird-shaped pastries, and joyful celebrations.

Light, airy, and cloud-like, Divinity is the perfect confection to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, a day when the Church remembers Christ’s rising into heaven. This traditional Southern candy, made by whipping egg whites with hot sugar syrup, has a delicate, ethereal texture that beautifully symbolizes the cloud that received Jesus from the disciples’ sight. Its bright white color and melt-in-your-mouth sweetness offer a tangible, celebratory reminder of the glory and mystery of this feast. Making Divinity requires attention and patience, much like the disciples’ watching and waiting, and becomes a fitting way to mark the day with reverence and joy.

The Rogation Days begins today! They are beautiful days set aside to

•recognize that the bounty that we take for granted is from the Lord
•offer thanks for the bounty
•pray for the harvest that comes from the land and the sea
•pray for the laborers and farmers that bring in the harvest
•pray for a blessing over the boundaries of our homes and churches.

For most of Christian history, feast day foods weren’t chosen because they were trendy or symbolic first—they were chosen because they were in season.

The foods of the harvest naturally became part of the celebrations of the Church year. Watermelon appeared at summer feast days. Wheat berries were eaten in winter. Fresh berries marked the abundance of spring.

The liturgical year and the rhythms of creation were deeply connected, reminding Christians that every harvest and every shared meal came from the hand of God.

There is something beautiful about recovering these rhythms again.

Happy Feast of St. Phillip and St. James!

St. Philip and St. James were both early followers of Jesus and are two of Jesus’ twelve apostles. We celebrate them on the same day because even though they died at different times and in different places, their bodies were moved and brought to the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Rome.

Let’s make Risi e Bisi for the Feast of St. Mark!

In Venice, this feast day, honoring St. Mark, disciple of Peter and author of the Gospel of Mark, is celebrated by making Risi e Bisi (Rice and Peas).

Easter is not just a day—it’s a whole season.

For fifty days, we are invited to remain in the joy of the Resurrection, not rushing past it but learning how to live in it. This year, I’m trying to be more intentional about celebrating Eastertide at home in simple, tangible ways.

One of the easiest places to begin is with food—something shared, something set apart, something that feels like a feast.

A powerful and easy way to practice resurrection in your home is with flowers. I make sure to keep a bouquet or little mini bouquets on our kitchen table all through the season of Easter to remind us that we are celebrating.

Every time I walk through the room and see those flowers, I am immediately prompted to offer thanks and praise for all that was accomplished on my behalf through Jesus’ death and resurrection and I hope that the same is true for my husband and children as well!

For the little Easter flower arrangements that in the pictures, I used various sizes of canning or jelly jars, a bouquet of alstromerias from my grocery store, and a thrifted white tablecloth. Alstromerias are a very common flower bouquet sold in grocery stores. They are very inexpensive and when used by themselves, have a very sweet, simple look. I love them! Oh, and they last for a very long time!

For Christians, Easter is the most joyful and jubilant celebration of the entire year. It is the day of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his triumph over sin and death.

This event is so miraculous that the celebration can’t possibly be contained in one day! That’s why Easter has a season of celebration known as the season of Easter.

During the season of Easter, we bask in the glory of the resurrection and celebrate the new life that we have in Christ. For 50 days, Christians around the world feast together, sing, and rejoice together in the resurrection of Our Lord and Savior. As Wendell Berry so vibrantly puts it, we “practice resurrection.” It is a deep and meaningful time that helps us to fully appreciate what Christ has accomplished for us.

The Christian Passover or Pasha is the high point of our Christian year. It should be the most joyful and jubilant celebration of the entire year. Because of Christ, we celebrate deliverance from evil and death and redemption into new life with Christians all over the world. We have been redeemed and will live forever with Christ, our King. This one day is the fulfillment of our entire liturgy. Every Sunday celebrates this day. This day is the gospel message that we preach to the world!
